Summary

It is absolutely clear from Scripture that God passionately desires supernatural unity within His Church。 Unity is what Jesus prays for, what He commands, and what He says will be our greatest witness to the world。

If unity is so important to the heart of God, why is the Church one of the most divided groups on earth?

In his newest book Until Unity, New York Times-bestselling author Francis Chan calls for believers and churches everywhere to align our hearts with God and start taking seriously His numerous commands to unify。 While many believe doctrine is at the root of the problem, Francis argues that the real problem is the shallowness or non-existence of our love for each other—rooted in a shallowness in our understanding of the gospel。 This is what desperately needs to change。

The reason that God gifts the Church with leaders is so they can equip God’s people in a way that leads to “unity of the faith” (Ephesians 4:13)。 We have done a poor job at this, but it can all change。 Those who are believers will hear the call and be “eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (v。 3)。 There will be opposition, but we cannot allow anything to discourage us from giving everything we have to the pursuit of a unified, restored Bride。

Practical, scriptural, spot onI would recommend this book to every pastor, every Church planter, every believer who is longing for more。 Praise God!

I was really looking forward to reading Until Unity by Francis Chan but the book fell short in my opinion。 Kind of ironic that a book about achieving unity felt so incongruous。 But I still appreciate Chan’s other writings and his quest for biblical authenticity。

I’ll have to work on a better review as I’ve had time to process, but some stream of consciousness thoughts on it:1) I would recommend it to friends。2) If you are heavy hearted over the divisiveness in our world, you will find yourself hopeful。 If you think you know it all and wish others would “open their eyes”。。。 you definitely need to read this。 3) I was amazed at the humility and repentance in Francis Chan‘s words。 What he shares is hard-fought and won experience。 Coming off of just re-readi I’ll have to work on a better review as I’ve had time to process, but some stream of consciousness thoughts on it:1) I would recommend it to friends。2) If you are heavy hearted over the divisiveness in our world, you will find yourself hopeful。 If you think you know it all and wish others would “open their eyes”。。。 you definitely need to read this。 3) I was amazed at the humility and repentance in Francis Chan‘s words。 What he shares is hard-fought and won experience。 Coming off of just re-reading “You and Me Forever” with our small group, it was impressive to see the change in his humility level between the two。 4) I highlighted SO much— some because my heart yelled “YES!”, some because my heart was convicted。 5) There are SO MANY scripture references in this book。 If you doubt what he has to say, read the scriptures he includes。 More when I’ve had time to digest :) 。。。more

The information presented is timely and so very needed。 So many meaningful and challenging points! I started off listening to the audiobook and had a hard time following at first。 Once I got the physical book in my hands, it was much better!

A call to unity in the church。。。 Jesus makes it clear he desires his followers to be one。

He leaves no excuse。 With more than 200 scripture references, Chan makes a convincing argument; Christ has called us to unity。 As we fill ourselves up with the Spirit, and seek the things of God, our lives open up to the fruit of the Spirit in others。 A broad stroke but an important one。 As always, I appreciate Chan's humility on the topic。 He leaves no excuse。 With more than 200 scripture references, Chan makes a convincing argument; Christ has called us to unity。 As we fill ourselves up with the Spirit, and seek the things of God, our lives open up to the fruit of the Spirit in others。 A broad stroke but an important one。 As always, I appreciate Chan's humility on the topic。 。。。more

In a time where the church is full of division, Chan brings us back to Scripture to remind us of the unity Christians are called to。 Richly Biblical, timely, convicting, and written in the fear of the Lord, this book is classic Francis Chan。

Wow。 What an awesome book! A must read! Life challenging and changing。 I pray God will use the information within to move His church toward the unity Christ pray for His followers to become。 I pray for the author’s boldness to speak truth in the mist of adversity。 I pray Lord that my life propagate your love toward us and the unity you desire of us toward each other。 I surrender my will to be a change agent for your glory Lord。 In Jesus name。

All the honest, relatable, witty, easy to understand writing you’d expect from a Francis Chan book。 There is one notable difference between this and his other work。 This book doesn’t contain as many modern day examples, however, it is way more scripture heavy- and how could I take a star off for that? This is an important message that the church needs right now, and I feel challenged to pray for a unified church, to really walk in the Holy Spirit that this might take place in my local church。 Re All the honest, relatable, witty, easy to understand writing you’d expect from a Francis Chan book。 There is one notable difference between this and his other work。 This book doesn’t contain as many modern day examples, however, it is way more scripture heavy- and how could I take a star off for that? Great book! Awesome verses! And laid out theologically well。 Francis' earnest heart is clearly displayed。 I listened to the audio-book easygoingly, and then read the paperbook seriously with annotations。 I'd highly recommend this book to all Christians and for those who are convicted by 1 John to "love one another。" Great book! This book was timely for me as I’ve wrestled with the many issues dividing the body of Christ。 As usual, Chan challenged me。 I just wish the “secondary” issues were more。。。obvious? And of course, he doesn’t go into details about what those might be。 Nevertheless, a really good read!

There’s been a lot of chatter about Francis Chan going off the deep end in the last few years, so this was first a refreshing read for that reason。 He is a “heretic” for moving counter-cultural to the American version of Christianity, which more and more disgusts me as well。 This kinda felt like two separate books to me。 He addressed unity and the fact that the Western church is so quickly divided over things that are inconsequential while all claiming to hold fast the same creeds, that our divi There’s been a lot of chatter about Francis Chan going off the deep end in the last few years, so this was first a refreshing read for that reason。 He is a “heretic” for moving counter-cultural to the American version of Christianity, which more and more disgusts me as well。 This kinda felt like two separate books to me。 He addressed unity and the fact that the Western church is so quickly divided over things that are inconsequential while all claiming to hold fast the same creeds, that our divisions are not God-guided but are rooted in pride and sin。 He also addresses what the church is and how this idea of creating churches where people can add Jesus as an upgrade to life is a lie and not the Church at all。 Jesus is all-consuming and life-altering! Both parts were equally good and convicting, and I think it’s a book well-worth reading! 。。。more

There's plenty of food for thought here。 Though I think Chan is looking to challenge and convict believers, I left this book feeling more frustrated than anything。 Many of the challenges he gives is to be sure we are displaying the fruit of the Spirit。 One of the greatest issues I had with the book and ultimately could not get over was his oversimplification and romanticizing of the early church, which he is well known for。 Multiple times, he claims that the church was very united up until the G There's plenty of food for thought here。 Though I think Chan is looking to challenge and convict believers, I left this book feeling more frustrated than anything。 Many of the challenges he gives is to be sure we are displaying the fruit of the Spirit。 One of the greatest issues I had with the book and ultimately could not get over was his oversimplification and romanticizing of the early church, which he is well known for。 Multiple times, he claims that the church was very united up until the Great Schism of 1054AD, which is extremely far from the truth。 There have been divisions and quarrels throughout church history of varying magnitude。 It's hard to take a book seriously when his main premise is so flawed。 That being said there's a fair amount of material here for pausing and examining oneself。 I found myself following his premises before he took a wild left turn to a conclusion that didn't match the build up。 。。。more

It’s not easy to write a book on anything important without first feeling the weight and responsibility of it。 This book is Francis Chan humbly calling the global Christian Church to repentance, while first starting with himself。 I pray with the Spirit’s help, I can begin to walk the path of unity with my brothers and sisters in Christ。

What an incredible read! Regardless of what you believe you have to respect Francis Chan - he embraces the straightforward implications of what he claims to believe with more humility than anyone I’ve seen, and if you’re willing, he brings you right along as the reader。 Maybe Chan is not the most well written individual in the world, so I almost gave this 4 stars because I’m such a faux-literary critic, but honestly this book just hit me too hard to not give 5。 Lots of 30 second pauses after rea What an incredible read! This book is possibly the best book on our Christian faith besides the Bible that I have ever read! I finished Pastor Chan's last book "Letters to the Church" last week and loved it, but this one is much much better。 The theme of church unity really resonates with me right now in light of my own Biblical views, our pastor's sermon series on Romans, and the current chaotic state of the American church。 The book is loaded with scripture passages to ground his many profound points。 I am going to pr This book is possibly the best book on our Christian faith besides the Bible that I have ever read! I love how this book centers around Jesus’ prayer for His followers to become one, like He and the Father are one。 Chan’s faith that this can happen in his lifetime is challenging to me。 I sure hope he is right。

The only reason that I gave this 4 stars is because the beginning was a little slow for me。 But it picked up mid way and was excellent till the end。 Such a critical and yet difficult subject。 So many efforts through the centuries have been made to reunite and restore the church, yet its still a goal worth pursuing。 It’s exciting to see someone like Chan acknowledge and encourage that。 But he also doesn’t shy away from the obstacles that make accomplishing unity so challenging。 Chan is upfront ab The only reason that I gave this 4 stars is because the beginning was a little slow for me。 But it picked up mid way and was excellent till the end。 Such a critical and yet difficult subject。 So many efforts through the centuries have been made to reunite and restore the church, yet its still a goal worth pursuing。 It’s exciting to see someone like Chan acknowledge and encourage that。 But he also doesn’t shy away from the obstacles that make accomplishing unity so challenging。 Chan is upfront about his own shortcomings and what he considers to be divisive actions in the past。 He doesn’t dismiss the importance of study and discussion about our differences and interpretations, but he reminds us to find common ground which is in the person and lordship of Jesus。 As the US rapidly becomes a post-Christian country, a unifying love of Christians could be the supernatural impact to bring people to Jesus。 There is so much division among Christians right now that it’s clearly having the opposite effect especially among Gen Z。 This isn’t a book that will be easy to read if you haven’t already been thinking about, studying and/or discussing this。 It will be easy to throw up your hands and say stop, this goes against the approach I grew up with or my denomination’s position。 But if the Spirit has been leading you in this direction, it may still be challenging and raise a lot of good questions but can be something you can read with a more open mind。 Hopefully this will encourage more people to begin with what we have in common instead of always starting with what we disagree about。 I applaud Chan for having to courage to even suggest that this is something we need to pursue in order to please God。 。。。more

The most accurate way I can describe this book is that it seems like Francis has so clearly “come to understand。” The verse in 2 Timothy that describes people who have “a form of godliness but deny its power,” followed by a descriptor that says they are “always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the truth (or coming to understanding)” has applied and does often apply to myself, as well as the church in many ways。 This isn’t good。 Francis has visibly wrestled with many topics through the The most accurate way I can describe this book is that it seems like Francis has so clearly “come to understand。” The verse in 2 Timothy that describes people who have “a form of godliness but deny its power,” followed by a descriptor that says they are “always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the truth (or coming to understanding)” has applied and does often apply to myself, as well as the church in many ways。 This isn’t good。 Francis has visibly wrestled with many topics through the years, and in reading several of his books and listening to his teaching, this book seems like a pinnacle moment。 Yes, unity is absolutely necessary。 Yes, we are to strive for that。 But truly, the most exciting part of this for me was seeing the confidence of Francis in knowing the truth and projecting it forward。 It was clear to me that hours of intimate time with the Lord bore way to this book, and that’s something painfully rare。So yes, Lord Jesus, pave the way。 We want to see the unity you want。 Have your way, Lord。 Spirit, lead us。 We love you, as you have loved us。 。。。more

I am amazed by the Spirit this week。 I’ve been struggling with overcoming divisive doctrine and be more connected with all of Christianity。 This is a very encouraging read。 There’s no easy answer to disunity。 But, the best first step to address is that we are commanded, expected, to do it, which is the thrust of this book。 As always I’m thankful for my brother Francis, who first challenged my belief that no one outside of my denomination is a Christian, who first challenged me to love the Spirit I am amazed by the Spirit this week。 I’ve been struggling with overcoming divisive doctrine and be more connected with all of Christianity。 This is a very encouraging read。 There’s no easy answer to disunity。 But, the best first step to address is that we are commanded, expected, to do it, which is the thrust of this book。 As always I’m thankful for my brother Francis, who first challenged my belief that no one outside of my denomination is a Christian, who first challenged me to love the Spirit, who first challenged me to rethink how we operate as a church。 Now, he’s challenging me to seek unity at all costs。 。。。more
